Lot Essay

The guide to the Pushkin exhibition states on p.23 M.A. Popov expose un dessin de Pouchkine, fort intéressant. Ce dessin est signé et daté, malheureusement les deux derniers chiffres sont effacés et l'on peut supposer seulement qu'il a dû être fait dans les années 1813-1814.

Pushkin, the father of modern Russian literature, was educated at the Imperial Lycée at Tsarskoe Selo [now Pushkin] from 1811 to 1817. At school he started his literary career contributing to manuscript journals and almanachs. Following the publication of his poem To my poet friend in the journal Vestnik Evropy in 1814 and his subsequent frequent appearance in print he became widely known in literary circles. Graduating from the Lycée he joined the college of Foreign Affairs in the autumn of 1817 and continued with his literary output. His life, creative, personal and political is well documented and widely known until his tragic death as a result of a duel in 1837.

Pushkin's manuscripts and entries in albums of friends are often accompanied by sketches, from self-portraits to satirical illustrations of extracts from his works, showing that he was also a talented amateur artist
