A RARE ICHI-MAI KAWARI HACHI
Momoyama/early Edo period (late 16th/early 17th Century)

The one piece bowl, of remarkable form, finely forged to the shape of the head of Fukurokuju with eccentric eyebrows, wrinkles, ears and warts, the mabizashi and koshimaki brought on separately, simple copper fukurin to mabizashi, back of the helmet shows signs of having had hair applied

Japanese one piece helmets are comparatively rare, even when copying the one piece examples of the West, the Japanese usually prefer to make them in two or four pieces. Most were made during the Edo period as tour de force and were often impractical, where as this example shows evidence of having been mounted for use.
