The secretaire with its gothic pointed-arch cornice rising from acanthus-wrapped trusses derives from a 'Lady Desk' pattern attributed to John Mayhew and illustrated in a Society of Upholsterers, Cabinet-Makers etc., Household Furniture, pt. II, published by Robert Sayer in 1764/5 (C. Gilbert, Genteel Household Furniture, Ilkley, 1978, pl. 53).
