Lot Essay

Heinrich Fuchs (Die Österreichische Bildnisminiatur, Vienna 1981, vol. I p. 67) mentions a portrait of Count Johann Josef Wilczek by Füger. Considering the age of the sitter on the present miniature, the only possible members of the Wilczek family are: Count Franz-Joseph Wilczek (1748-1834), K.u.K. Kämmerer and a member of the Order of St-John of Jerusalem, who married first Antonia, née Harrach, and then Therese, née Öttingen-Spielberg; or his cousin Joseph (1752-1828), also an Imperial and Royal Camerarius, furthermore a Field-marshal and Lieutenant, who was married to Rosalie von Schulz. A preparatory study for the present portrait was sold Sotheby Parke Bernet Zürich, " A Fine Collection of Portrait Miniatures", 15 November 1977, lot 109.
