Archduke Ludwig (Florence 1784 - 1864 Vienna), son of Emperor Leopold II of the Holy Roman Empire and his wife Maria Ludovika of Spain, took part in the war against France, 1805-1809. After the death of his elder brother Emperor Franz I of Austria in 1835, he became president of the Regency committee during the reign of his insane nephew, Emperor Ferdinand I. A supporter of Metternich's conservative attitude, he retired from politics after the Revolution of 1848.
