Several of the figures in this drawing occur in drawings and paintings by the artist; for example the pictures of battles in the Museo de Bellas Artes, Seville and the Musée Départemental des Vosges and a drawing in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam. The studies are possibly inspired by Jacques de Gheyn II (1565-1629), whose Exercise of Arms was published in The Hague in 1607
