The present picture is after the original composition by Wootton of which several versions exist, one of which is in the Portland Collection, now on loan to the National Trust at Wimpole Hall (see A. Meyer, John Wootton, Landscapes and Sporting Art in early Georgian England, London, 1984, p. 32-3). By the early 18th Century Newmarket had already become the principal centre of racing, while Warren Hill, slightly to the east of Newmarket was used as a place to train. The spire of St. Mary's can be seen on the left of the picture. In the middle ground, to the right, is the King's Chair from which the King might obtain a good vantage point from which to watch the horses training.
