Chinnery made a large number of sketches in a variety of media between 1808 and 1812. He was living at this time in Dacca. Chinnery was a highly proficient portrait painter although one client remarked 'He likes landscape painting a thousand to one better than portrait painting'. Chinnery executed many sketches of Eastern Bengal (now Bangladesh) concentrating in particular on the villages and the cattle
