John VI (1767-1826), son of Mary I and Peter III of Portugal, was successively Regent (1792-1816) and King of Portugal (1816-1826). In 1785, he married Doña Charlotte Joachima (1775-1830) of Spain, daughter of King Charles IV and Queen Maria-Luisa (see lot 365). John VI was surnamed "the Clement", and his peaceful character was totally different from that of his wife who inherited her mother's violence.
