Harewood House was built for Henry Lascelles, the first Earl of Harewood, from 1771-1849. Lascelles, a Director of the East India Company, had made his fortune from the ribbon trade and the collection of customs in Barbados. The plans for the house were laid out by John Carr who began its construction. However, several other architects of repute are known to have worked on the estate including the immensely successful Robert Adam and Sir Charles Barry. The House succeeds in amalgamating Carr's and Adam's neo-classical style with Barry's early Victorian approach. The grounds were landscaped by Sir William Chambers from 1755-6
