Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson, first baronet, was an assyriologist who entered the military service of the East India Company and had a long and distinguished career in the Near and Middle East. He is also known for deciphering the cuneiforn inscription of Darius Hystaspes at Behistun.

A label on the back of the frame states that this autograph document by the Shah was presented to Sir Henry in 1883 with a portrait of the Shah. A French translation of the document is given which states that, in recognition of his excellent character, of his being a constant friend to Persia and one of the great men of his time, the Shah wished to give the ambassador a special token of his esteem through the intermediary of Prince Muhammad Khan, so that his family would have a reminder of the Shah's sincere esteem and satisfaction. Dated Tehran, Rajab 1299.

Another example of the Shah's handwriting was sold in these Rooms, 9 October 1990, lot 6.
