Eight leaves of calligraphy
four signed by Sultan Muhammad Nur

comprising Qur'anic text, religious formulae, calligraphic excercises and ghazals by Amir Hasan Dihlawi, Amir Shahi Sabzawari and Hafiz, Persian and Arabic manuscript on buff and coloured paper, panels of elegant black or coloured nasta'liq with gold and polychrome illuminated triangles, in gold and coloured margins between black rules and/or illuminated floral and inscription cartouche borders, four folios signed on one side by Sultan Muhammad Nur, two also signed by Shah Mahmud and Sultan 'Ali, the lines of outlined calligraphy signed by Kamal al-Din, the remainder unsigned with lines of naskh and nasta'liq of differing sizes within various illuminated borders and margins, all mounted on gold-sprinkled blue, green or buff leaves

Sultan 'Ali (b. Muhammad) Mashhadi was one of the most gifted calligraphers of his time, championing the 'eastern' style of nasta'liq practised in Herat, where he spent time at the court atelier. He died in Mashhad in AH 926/1530 AD.
Shah Mahmud Zarin-qalam was from Nishapur and a pupil of 'Abdi. He spent some time in Tabriz, both composed and copied poetry, died in Mashhad in AH 972/1564-5 AD and was buried there beside Sultan 'Ali.
