The Drawing-Room 'loo' table, with altar-tripod plinth on griffin-feet and exotic veneer of richly figured gonzalez-alvez wood inlaid with brass ribbons in the Louis Quatorze manner, relates to a brass-mounted table incorporating Thomas Stothard's 'Wellington shield' engraving of 1822 that is likely to have been presented by the Duke of Wellington to Sarah Sophia, Countess of Jersey (d. 1869); see: J. Yorke, 'A Table of Triumph', Country Life, 3 November 1988, p. 215. These tables, like the Sheringham Hall brass-inlaid table (sold Christie's, house sale, 22 October 1986, lot 57) ultimately derive from the ebony-inlaid 'round monopodium' designed by the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d. 1832) and illustrated in his Household Furniture & Interior Decoration 1807, pl.
