The general form of these marquises, including the sunk-panelled frame and elliptic front-rail, corresponds to that of bergère chairs executed by François Hervé (d.1796), the Paris-trained chairmaker of Johns Street, and supplied in 1791 to the order of the architect Henry Holland (d.1806) and the marchand mercier Dominique Daguerre (d.1796) for Althorp, Northamptonshire (see: Apollo, June 1968, pp. 271-2).
