The Grecian sofa, with its Roman studded rail and foliate-wrapped trusses, evolved from the antique style established by Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. It relates to the 'Northumberland' seat-furniture manufactured by Messrs. Morel and Hughes in the early 1820s (see: F. Collard, Regency Furniture, Woodbridge, 1987, pl. 12) and the fashion popularised by Thomas King's Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829
