The chairs, with their elegantly serpentined legs embellished with Roman acanthus foliage, are designed in the early 18th Century French manner that developed from patterns illustrated in Daniel Marot's Second Livre d'Appartements of circa 1700.
Their tall rectangular-panelled backs were conceived for the contemporary 21in. broad damask. They were originally upholstered en suite with a bed, with fringed silk cases richly embroidered with flower-festooned and ribbon-tied bouquets. There is a possibility that the bedroom suite may have been commissioned by the Vane family, Earls of Darlington, and introduced to Pepper Arden, Yorkshire, following the marriage of Richard Pepper Arden, 3rd. Baron Alvanley (d.1857) to Arabella, daughter of Henry Vane, 2nd Earl of Darlington and 1st Duke of Cleveland (d.1842)
