The arms are close to those of Felice Peretti, later Pope Sixtus V, but the lion holds a sword rather than a flower. The present drawing is probably preparatory for a print. Similar compositions with allegorical figures flanking a Cardinal's coat-of-arms were etched by Oliviero Gatti (Illustrated Bartsch 41, no. 33) and Giovanni Luigi Valesio (Illustrated Bartsch 40, no. 96)
