With a brass cross supporting a bulbous acanthus leaf and flame plume holder issuing a red horsehair plume, the brass helmet plate centred by the initials NSW within a belt inscribed VOLUNTEER MOUNTED RIFLES on a sunburst, beneath a crown, with rosettes, brass edging and repousse leaf band, a leather backed chin strap
