Larraz created several pictures that include figures based at least tangentially on famous authors. In the mid 1970s he painted two works, Reflections and Dinner at Negresco's, in which the principal figures represent Somerset Maugham. Both these paintings are affecting portraits of the nobility of old age. The man sits alone at his dining table, but he does not reflect loneliness or solitude. On the contrary he seems perfectly in charge of a vast intellect, aware of the world around him, ready to make any incident he observes the subject of a literary masterpiece.
