In the Charles II style, of circular form, on spreading circular foot, the lower body chased with alternating acanthus leaves and palmettes, with scroll leaf-clad handles, the slightly domed cover chased with reeds and acanthus leaves in relief, surmounted by a foliate finial, the sides engraved with Royal armorials and, on the other side, with a presentation inscription, marked under base and on cover--9 1/4in.(23.5cm.) high

The inscription reads, John George Chetwynd-Talbot Viscount Ingestre, from his Godparents King George V and Queen Mary on the occasion of his Christening January 9th 1915.

John Chetwynd-Talbot, born December 1, 1914, was the eldest son of Charles, Viscount Ingestre, son of the 20th Earl of Shrewsbury. He succeeded to the Earldom as the 21st Earl on the death of his grandfather in 1921. He was Hereditary Lord High Steward of Ireland and by virtue of this office, he carried a white wand at the coronation of George VI in 1937.
