Emile Hébert (d.1893) studied sculpture under his father, Pierre, and exhibited at the Salon between 1846 and 1893. Mephistopheles was executed and exhibited in 1853 and as an early work in the sculptors oeuvre differs in style and subject-matter from much of his later pieces.
