This lantern is a copy of that supplied to the Petit-Trianon by the bronzier Lafond in 1811. It is, however, probable that the lantern was originally made by Thomire around 1785 for Marie-Antoinette's Salon de compagnie of the Petit-Trianon.
A closely related model was sold at Sotheby's, London on 3rd November 1989, lot 530.
