According to Greek mythology Hebe was the daughter of Jupiter and Juno. Here we see Hebe seated with Jupiter's eagle, a familiar attendant of the god and one in which he often personifies himself. She holds her attributes, a nectar bearing cup and ewer, offering the cup to the eagle. The model was first exhibited at the Salon of 1859 and was popular with critics and the public alike. The sculpture was probably the first piece of Carrier-Belleuse's work to adopt the Renaissance style, showing in the group the influence of the Fontainbleau School. Carrier's work during this period was characterised by his attention to detail, in this instance, the fine chiselling of the hair, jewellery and feathers.
