This photomontage was used originally in a special issue of AIZ "Reichstagsbrandprozess/Gegenprozess" (Reichstag Fire trial/counterfeit) dedicated to the trial of the four men accused of arson in the fire that destroyed the Reichstag on February 27, 1933. Heartfield made use of the image of the twisted snakes not only in AIZ but reproduced it as a postcard along with three other images, commemorating the trial and on the back cover of a 1934 book about the trial Dimitroff contra Goering.
