A hand written note signed by George W. Scott Jr. and dated May 14, 1975 reads: From the David M. Musselman Collection, Munell (near Ephrata) Pa. . . . Absolutely no repairs, restorations of redecorations.

With its applied pilasters and painted recessed panels, this chest is characteristic of hinge-top chests made in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Both the architectonic frieze and the decorated panels are derived from early European furniture designs introduced into Germany from Italy during the 16th century and were popular among German immigrants who settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Other features which attribute this chest to Lancaster County are the wrought iron strap hinges and grab lock. This chest is in the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Decorative Arts Photographic Collectio, no. A related example attributed to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is in the Winterthur collection and is illustrated in Scott T. Swank, Arts of the Pennsylvania Germans (New York, 1983), p.137, fig. 81
