ROOSEVELT, THEODORE, President. Photograph of the President and his family, signed by him ("Theodore Roosevelt") the First Lady ("Edith Kermit Roosevelt") and six other family members, "Photographed at Oyster Bay, N.Y., July 2nd, 1903." 373 x 459 mm. (14 11/16 x 18 in.) including mount. Printed caption at bottom: "President Roosevelt and Family" giving the names of each family member, copyright by Pach Bros., 1903.
A superb, oversize photograph of the 44-year-old President Roosevelt and First Lady Edith Roosevelt, surrounded by their family, seated in the garden of the Roosevelt mansion on Long Island. Roosevelt is wearing riding boots and holds a white Stetson hat on his lap. Alongside him are all eight members of the First Family, who have each carefully signed the bottom edge of mount. The signers are (from left to right): "Quentin Roosevelt" (aged 5), "Theodore Roosevelt," "Theodore Roosevelt Jr." (aged 15), "Archibald Bulloch Roosvet" [sic] (aged 9), "Alice Lee Roosevelt" (aged 19), "Kermit Roosevelt" (aged 13), "Edith Kermit Roosevelt" (the First Lady), "Ethel Carow Roosevelt" (aged 11). Apparently several similar photographs were taken by Pach at this sitting. Curiously, upon close inspection it is evident that the head and shirtfront image of the President has been meticulously cut from one of the other photographs and almost invisibly pasted in place. The portrait with Roosevelt's face unchanged is illustrated on the cover of Hermann Hagedorn The Roosevelt Family of Sagamore Hill, while the photograph from which the present head was taken is depicted in Nicholas Roosevelt's memoir Theodore Roosevelt: The Man as I Knew Him. A highly unusual combination of signatures. Provenance: Darvick, 4 October 1990, lot 366.
