An 1875 catalogue by William Demuth and Company of "Smokers' ARticles and Show Figures" includes several carved wood cigar store Indians. Figures 12, 15 and 14 include the same feathered and star-centered diadem, feather-decorated neckline and hem and draped cape. These figures could be made as either male or female, and could also include such added features as a dagger and box of cigars held in the opposite arms. A figure such as the example illustrated here would have cost approximately $42.00 in 1875 (see Freid, Artists in Wood (New York, 1970), pp.32-61).
