Sarah Work was the daughter of Col. Andrew Galbraith and Barbara Kyle. She married John Bannister Gibson in 1812. He was a prominent figure in the Pennsylvania judiciary, serving on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1816-1853. Eicholtz painted Mr. Gibson in 1812, when this portrait was probably made.
