Sercial Madeira--Vintage 1936
Neck levels, bearing the name of Noel Cossart and his family
crest; labels now worn and faded, one barely legible; bottled 1947

These bottles were originally sold by a member of the Cossart family through Christie's London in 1979. Michael Broadbent notes: a wine of the highest quality made from special late-harvest Sercial grapes at the "Old Gordon" Torre Bella estate at Camara de Lobos, hand-picked by Noel Cossart towards the end of the 1936 vintage. The juice was fully fermented then 10 alcohol by volume added. The wine was matured in old American white oak casks that had previously held 1868 Sercial. No "surdo" sweetening wine added. It was bottled, bone dry, after further fortification with grape brandy, in 1947, and laid down for Noel Cossart's daughter, born in 1957. 1936 is considered the finest vintage for Sercial this century. A rare wine, never sold commercially.
