"I had never heard of this firm before I was approached by one of
the two surviving sons to sell through Christie's a wide range from
the family cellars in Funchal. All were of outstandingly high
quality. The Acciaiolis are (or were, as they no longer live
there) one of the oldest families on the island, and being descended
from Simon Acciaioli (sic), originally from Florence, who
settled there in 1525. As the English and colonial trade was
virtually the monopoly of the British family firms, Acciaioli
concentrated on Scandinavia, "by appointment to HM King Gustav VI
Adolf" (of Sweden) appearing on some of the labels. I have two
fairly recent notes, one prior to cataloguing. Both medium-deep amber
with a very pronounced apple green rim; refined, ethereal,
high-toned, a scent like crystallised violets; sweet, full-bodied as
all Terrantez should be, and coping well with its high acidity. A
wine of great power and persistence of flavour. Last noted...Jan
1990. Five stars." JMB
