LONDON, 1746, MAKER'S MARK OF THOMAS WHIPHAM
Of spherical form, the body elaborately repousse and chased with foliate scrolls, flowerheads, scale and brickwork on a matted ground, enclosing on each side an asymmetrical cartouche engraved with a coat-of-arms, with raffia covered overhead foliate scroll swing handle supported by dolphin scrolls, the hinged cover chased with similar decoration and surmounted by a bud finial, the stand raised on three foliate scroll supports headed by masks, joined by an openwork acanthus scroll and foliate swag apron enclosing a mask at intervals, with central circular burner with later side handle with wood bead finial, marked under base and on lamp--overall height 14 1/2in.
