A YOKOYA SCHOOL KOZUKA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1825), SIGNED SOMIN WITH KAO

The plate is polished copper with the head and arm of the Daruma inlaid in relief. The details are carved in brushstroke syle (katakiribori). The eyes are inlaid in gold and shakudo, and the reverse is shakudo with a partial diagonal gold inset plate--height 9.7cm., width 1.5cm., thickness 5.0mm.

Double wood storage boxes. The inner box with description but not signed.

This could very well be the work of the third Somin. He was the son of the Uchida family. At the age of 29 he was apprenticed to Gonzaemon Tsunenori (fl. 1800). He was not of the main line of the Yokoya family, but he has been ranked as both the third Somin and the fifth Yokoya. He did not succeed to the family title.
