A SENDAI INLAY TSUBA

The thick solid shakudo plate is formed as a polearm, in Chinese style, with the pole and other features decorated in flush gold wire inlay of various patterns--height 6.7cm., width 6.5cm., thickness 6.5mm.

The design is often seen in iron plates made by the artists of the Shoami school of Aizu. This shakudo example is undoubtedly the work of either the famous artist, Sendai Kiyosada (fl. 1775), or his school. The subject is the halberd carried by Kwan Yu, the Chinese general, who was deified as the Chinese god of war.
