A JINGO SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850)

The oval iron plate has a wide dish-form groove just inside the rim. The face is carved with a kiri leaf in silver nunome and a kiri bloom at the top in gold nunome. Carved chrysanthemum petals above and below the central opening have touches of silver nunome. The reverse is carved similarly with silver nunome leaves, gold blooms, and chrysanthemum petals--height 8.1cm, width 7.6cm., thickness 4.0mm.

This style of Jingo tsuba was probably made in Edo as it has many of the Edo Higo characteristics of the Kumagai school.
