Born in Hyogo Prefecture, Kiyonaga studied Western-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts under Okada Saburo (1869-1939). In 1937 he traveled to Europe where he painted what he termed 'grayworks', nudes before blue-gray backgrounds.
