The present owner, a former student of Josef Hoffmann, acquired these vases directly from Joseph Urban, the Viennese designer who directed Wiener Werkstatte of America, the retail gallery at 581 Fifth Avenue, New York. Although Urban's shop was only open from 1922 to 1924, his career as an architect and set designer in New York was long-lived and successful. (See Karen Davies, At Home in Manhattan: Modern Decorative Arts, New Haven, 1983, p. 83.)

These vases are part of a set of four made for one of Hoffmann's dining rooms. The other pair from this set is now in a private collection in New York.
