The arms are those of Frere, as born by the Rt. Hon. John Hookham Frere of Roydon Hall, Norfolk and of Finningham, Suffolk, born in 1769. He was MP for West Looe in 1796 and Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs in 1799. He was sent as envoy to Lisbon and served as Minister to Madrid from 1802-1808. The presence of the Royal Arms on these dishes signifies that they doubtless form part of the service of plate furnished to him by the Jewel House for use while en poste in Madrid.

Frere was created Marquez de la Union in Spain and was celebrated in his time for his translation of Aristophanes. He married in 1816 Elizabeth Jemima, Countess Dowager of Erroll. He died at Malta in 1846.
