Of oval form on four reeded scroll feet, with reeded rim and two foliate reeded handles, the field engraved with stylized foliate acorn border enclosing the Portuguese presentation inscription dated 1792 enclosed by an acorn and ribbon cartouche, marked on reverse--24in. (61cm.) long

The inscription translates: To the illustrious Dezembargador Antonio Rodriquez Vellozo de Oliveira, Corvegedor and Juiz Conservador dos Inglezes the island of Madeira presents on behalf of the British factory of that island in recognition of the humanity with which the said gentleman saved the lives and cargo of the English ship Sally, Captain John Isaac, when it was shipwreck off Machico on January 9, 1792.
