The articulated eight bar wire-work frame on five bead feet, surmounted by wire-work scrolls supporting an oval cartouche engraved with script initials below a loop handle, marked under base with pseudo- hallmark--5½in. (14cm.) high

Folding toastracks are rare in English silver, and are virtually unknown in Chinese export silver. The only published example, described as the only one known, is illustrated in John Devereux Kernan, The Chait Collection of Chinese Export Silver, 1985, pp. 214-216. It is identical to this one, but lacks the engraved initials, and is marked "P" with pseudo-hallmarks. A related toastrack, not folding, by Sunshing is illustrated in Jean Gordon Lee, Philadelphians and the China Trade, 1984, fig. 87, p. 113.

The marks on this toastrack are those attributed to Cutshing, illustrated in H.A. Crosby Forbes et al., Chinese Export Silver, 1975, fig. 225, p. 244.
