The chased foliate scroll decoration on this casket should be compared with similar decoration found on a gold two-handled cup salvaged from the wreck of the Santo Cristo de San Roman, part of the Spanish plate fleet sunk in 1715. Common to both are the incisions which appear on the scrolling vine stalks and the way in which the foliage sits within the borders while not totally integrated with them--an overall effect which suggests a Philippine origin
