Although Bridgeman was not known for scenes of contemporary Western lifestyle, he actually did do a few works much later thematically relating to this sketch. Bridgeman also painted several Oriental scens of people returning from the ball. The theme would have fit his lifestyle, as his first wife was quite wealthy and the artist became fond of the " good life" often visiting and gambling in Monte Carlo. Bridgeman also demonstrated in his Oriental scenes and an increasing interest in twilight and illuminated night scenes beginning in the 1880's We are grateful to Dr. Ilene Susan Fort for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
