Sculpteur, modèle et tête sculpté was drawn in the year that Picasso turned fifty. He recently completed a series of illustrations for Ovid's Metamorphoses, and had already done eleven of the etchings that would eventually comprise the Vollard Suite, published in 1939. This drawing looks forward to the principal narrative thread that runs through the Vollard Suite: the sculptor in his studio, contemplating his creation in the presence of his model. At the landmark half-century point in his life, Picasso could similarly look back on his own achievement, and it is fitting that he undertakes this in his most completely classical style, in which even his characters seem drawn from antiquity.
