Monet spent part of 1894 painting views of the Seine near his home in Giverny, a village slightly upstream from Vernon. The present work is one of seven closely associated views of the river that he made that year (Wildenstein, nos. 1376-1382). In the course of this series, the artist tightened his view of the bend of the river, eliminating the Lombard poplars at the left, seen in the earlier versions, but absent in the present work. In this picture, Monet has concentrated on capturing the effect of morning mist on the river. Two of the paintings in this series are in the Musée Marmottan in Paris (Wildenstein, nos. 1379 and 1380).
