AN ARITA SHELL-FORM JAR

Moulded in the form of a large conch shell supported by three feet in the form of small lumps of coral, each in turn moulded with small colored shells, the exterior surface of the vessel simulating the rippled, stippled surface-texture of a shell and also patterned with florets and foliate scroll which are enamelled in white, green or blue, the random small sea shells enamelled in yellow, blue or green; the interior of the conch glazed white and the inner lip covered by a celadon glaze ending at a red edge, the flat cover fitted with a smaller conch-form knop also glazed in celadon and colored enamels matching the larger conch--8¼in. (20.9cm.) long, 4½in. (10.4cm.) high
