comprising; three copper haystack measures, 19th century, the quart with seal stamped MERCIA SQUARE, LONDON, the pint with seal ARROW JACKSON LIMITED, LONDON, the half pint with brass stamped mount; a gill and half gill each with brass handles; a pair of George II brass ejector candlesticks, mid 18th century, of pilar form, on domed circular bases -- 6½in. (16.5cm.) high; a single brass ejector candlestick, of pilar form on domed circular base -- 7 1/8in. (18cm.) high; a brass pole-head, emblem of the Friendly Society - 6¾in. Brass society emblems were commonly produced in the West Country, as decorative elements representative of the name of the inn, inwhich the society members of the particular local parish met. In this instance, the two men shaking hands represented The Salutation. These mutual aid societies evolved from the late 18th century and by 1801 there were at least 5,000. Contributing members received various benefits in times of need and participated in various feast days and parades, during which the poles were displayed.
