Kinji ground; decoration in gold and silver takamaki-e, hiramaki-e and togidashi-e with gold and silver foil and silver inlay; interior nashiji; rims gold lacquer

The lid of the writing-box with a riverside residence; the interior with chrysanthemums by a stream; removable tray with two brushes, a paper-pricker, a paper-knife, and ink-stick; gilt copper suiteki [water-dropper] formed as a flying crane; ink-stone with gold-lacquered rim; exterior of the paper-box with a continuous waterscape of pine-studded shores, tall cliffs and two boats

The loose combination of pine-studded shores, sailing boats and deserted pavilions may refer indirectly to Suma, Sumiyoshi and Suminoe, seaside locations in the vicinity of present-day Osaka much associated with Heian-period (794-1185) poems of exile and solitude1
