Inscribed on the reverse of the original canvas 'Joan Tiepolo, En Mad. a^o. 1768'

Despite the inscription on the reverse of the unlined canvas (see above) Professor George Knox believes that the present painting is by Lorenzo Tiepolo, Giandomenico's brother. An almost identical version, by Giandomenico Tiepolo was formerly with Tomas Harris (see A. Mariuz, Giandomenico Tiepolo, 1971, p. 122, fig. 229).
