Lot Essay

These handsome commodes, with lion monopodia and Grecian pedimented and palm-flowered 'chiffonier' tops, are conceived in the George IV 'antique' manner popularised by George Smith's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1826. Smith illustrates a related 'Chiffonier in his chapter devoted to 'Practical Perspective' (pl. 8).
