Alternately composed of reeded foliage links enclosing conical drops, vertical beaded and applied wire links with double scroll tops, the woven chain threaded with bound wire balusters, with rosettes at intervals, with French assay and maker's marks, circa 1880, in associated fitted case with retailer's address Edward & Sons, 92 Buchanan St., Glasgow, 59.0cm. long, (one link deficient)

Eugène Fontenay (1823-1887) was one of the most knowledgeable and dedicated craftsmen of the last half of the 19th Century, and his work shows a masterful use of bound wire, filigree ornament and granulation. Cf. Christie's 12 March, 1986 (lot 307), 20 June, 1990 (lot 6) and 5 October 1994 (lot 73)
