Scott and his wife Philippa, a professional photographer, went to South Africa in the winter of 1962 arriving in Johannesburg on 16 January 1963. The purpose of the trip was a holiday, and Scott hoped to complete a 500 km flight gaining his third gliding qualification. Scott's diary entry for 17 January reads: 'We motored 60 miles out past Hartebeestepoort to Lady Oppenheimer's farm for the afternoon and evening. On a dam there we saw our first wild Black Ducks. I spent part of the weekend painting some pictures for Ev's (Everard Read) Wildlife Exhibition at the Pieter Wenning Galleries (P. Scott, Travel Diaries of a Naturalist, London, 1983, vol. I, p. 197).
